Threads notebook: Jays feeling blue?
Posted 8 April 2011 by Tex Connally
Rumors, I mean, rumours from our civilized cousins to the north suggest that the Toronto Blue Jays might return to using blue as a primary color in the near future.
Odd that the ballclub presently uses black as its primary color — after all, the team nickname includes the word blue. But such is the effect of the “Black For Black’s Sake” design ethic that swept sports in the 1990s.
Now let it be recorded that this writer likes black. This writer likes black power. But as for inserting black into color schemes that don’t need black, the answer here is no.
Should Toronto return to the blue, that would leave the New York Mets as the lone team engaging in gratuitous BFBS silliness. Kansas City and Oakland have recently repented and gone back to their traditional color schemes. The Rangers and Reds still indulge some obsidian absurdities, but only tangentially.
The Astros, Diamondbacks, Giants, Marlins, Orioles, Pirates, Rockies and White Sox all use black as a team color, but legitimately so. Granted, most of those teams incorporated black as part of a redesign. But there’s a difference between having black as a straight-up team color and blackening your team’s existing color scheme like it was a cheap catfish fillet.
So, much love to teams that look stylish in sable. But to those who don’t: Pick a color. And here’s hoping the Jays can do better than their current style of almost blue.
